about this website

what is the goal of this website?

To entertain you. To occupy you, distract you, amaze you, make you laugh, give you something to share with your friends, to help you procrastinate, to help you pass time, to let your ADD run free, to increase interneuronal hyper-associativity, to enrich dendritic arborization. i'm trying to do my part to satiate the world's endless appetite for nonsense.

To stimulate you. To educate you, to encourage/inspire you to make your own stuff (and to stand behind it because it is yours and you love it, and to share it with everyone else because you are proud of it), to fascinate you, to get your creative juices flowing, to massage your cerebral cortex, to tease your limbic system, maybe even propogate a few action potentials throughout the ole' hippocampal circuitry. To get you more interested in the human brain, because the brain is frickin' awesome.

To help you chill the f out. To calm you, relax you, appease you, tranquilize you, to help you get away from your everyday troubles. To give you somewhere to unwind, to ignore everything and everyone, to space out, to rock. To give you somebody at whom to laugh. To remind you that the world isn't necessarily ending tomorrow.

To promote you and me. I'm brilliant. You're brilliant. Let's share our brilliance with the awaiting world. I've been posting a bunch of my work on this website, and I invite you to do the same. If you send me links to your stuff, I'll try to work them into this website. Also--and this is my favorite--you should remix the stuff you see on this website. Add a guitar track or a vocal track or whatever to one of these songs, or write up a little response to one of these articles, or...do something else that's creative and awesome. Click here to send your stuff to me.

does this website make money?

uh...in theory. let's put it this way: my dream is to make a crapload of money by just posting new, awesome stuff on this website and letting you enjoy it. click here to help me achieve that dream.

i'd rather not have to bother you with blinking/flashing/otherwise-intrusive advertisements. there are a few solutions to this, which I have here listed out, but not yet fully described:

-moichandise. i am working on a little online mall. it will feature several themed stores that each feature silly, clever, original, idiosyncratic, dorky, hilarious and peculiar T-shirts and other crap. stay posted.

-Google AdSense. google uses its technology to assess the content on each page, and then puts up relevant links. i like this, because it may actually be useful. for instance, if you're listening to my song about facebook, you might be somebody who has an expansive online social life, or is a fan of music. conveniently, AdSense might display advertisements for singles sites or cheap mp3 downloads. additionally, the service lets me design the colors of the text so that they blend right in with the website. yeah, so, uh, go click on some of them, because they're good, and they help me. thanks.

-custom advertisements and work. do you have a company or a website? maybe i can produce a silly, original and awesome commercial, video or song for you. more about that here: http://abitofnonsense.com/money.html

-gimmicks. soon, i hope to design a series of other ridiculous, shameless, clever, and bizarre ways to make money online. these will include an online money trash can, an online fight-resolver, and some other great crap. stay posted.

i apologize.

why is this stuff so random?

"dude, i just watched a 10-second clip of you pretending to staple yourself, and then pretending to not know what a stapler is. wtf's the deal?"

you've probably noticed that there's not much of a running theme throughout my work. in fact, a lot of the stuff on this website is completely random, as if the video camera was just spontaneously turned on, with no script or plan. well, you're right. that is what happened. that's how i make most of this stuff. i'm not a big fan of "scripts" or "planning."

in addition to the content being random, i have randomized the structure of this website. i have tried to set this website up so that visitors will see random links, and they can click on whichever ones they want. i don't want to tell you which way to go - you can choose your own path better than i can! why do i care so much about doing things in a random order? because....

Randomness is brilliant. If I haven't mentioned it yet, I'm a big fan of neuroscience, particularly the human brain. I like learning, and I like learning about learning, and I like learning about ways to think and to learn and to be creative, and all of that stuff. A lot of what I've learned about the brain suggests that it is a huge network of cells that are connected to each other. When we learn new things, we form new cellular connections. New groups of cells reach out to each other. This is how the brain grows. This is how we get smarter.

In the spirit of making you, me, and everyone else smarter, I'm trying to stimulate your brain in new and random ways. Hopefully, this website will make some new connections in your brain. I'll try to explain this better soon. Stay posted.

why is this stuff so incomplete/unrefined/low-quality/half-assed/crappy?

Cuz' that's how we roll. I'm an incomplete, unrefined, low-quality, half-assed, crappy kinda guy. Actually, I enjoy the process just as much as the product. I don't think that I should hide things from people until they're "done." You should be able to watch my songs, videos, and writings develop.

This way, you can help me create.

As far as quality is concerned, I'm just a guy and a computer. I don't have a studio (help me change that), also i favor improvised stuff, candid stuff, never take sincere pictures, like the working progress, encourage you to contribute and remix anything you see here. as far as the resolution and sound quality of the video clips and audio tracks, that comes down to time and space. High-quality, full-size sound and video files take up a lot of webspace (i only have so much), and they can take a long time to download. The good news is that when i bust out huge and get millions of visitors, i'll be making enough money to purchase more webspace and faster downloads. In fact, i'll be able to make the entire website a lot better in a lot of ways.

what's with all lower-case letters?

i don't know. i guess they seem more modest to me. i use capital letters when i deem it necessary for clarity's sake.
